Horizons #6: Solarium and glass roofs
Glass surfaces are finding more space on board new generation cruise ships to guarantee more lighting to interiors, with skylights of various size and shapes, wide Solarium and Winter Gardens.
Solarium on board Royal Caribbean ships
Somec has supplied the glazing to the Solarium of Royal Caribbean ships Quantum & Anthem of the Seas, and after this summer will install the same Solarium glazing on the new Ovation of the Seas.
The glass surface extends above the Solarium pool for 1200 square meters on the fore part of the ship on deck 15, and is realized with high-performance and insulating double glass. Sixteen windows with aluminum frame are motorized for upward opening.
"The Haven Courtyard" on Norwegian Cruise Line ships
For Norwegian Cruise Line ships Breakaway and Escape Somec has glazed all the roof of "The Haven Courtyard" on deck 19, having a total surface of about 700 sqm. The glass cladding is characterized by insulating double glass featuring different screen printing on the roof and on the side vertical walls.
The glazing is treated to improve the resistance to salt stain and atmospherical agents, guaranteeing a more durable cleaning and reduce maintenance.
Skylight and aft glazing on F.A. Gauthier ferry
Somec has provided the fire resistant glass panes on the roof and vertical sides of the skylight on board F.A. Gauthier ferry. For the roof a new certified fire-proof system has been developed: this glazing can be installed horizontally and therefore works as glass deck. Moreover, Somec has also supplied the segmented glazing from deck 6 to 7 on the aft, made with a steel structure covered by aluminium profiles and filled with insulating glass having an external triple coloured glass with selective coating.
